Many Indian job seekers skip the cover letter entirely, assuming nobody reads them. That is a mistake. While not every application requires one, when a job posting asks for a cover letter — or when you are applying directly to a hiring manager — a well-written cover letter can be the difference between getting an interview and getting ignored.
Why Cover Letters Matter in India
In the Indian job market, cover letters serve a specific purpose: they explain context that your resume cannot. Why are you switching from services to product? Why is there a gap in your employment? Why are you interested in this specific company? A resume lists what you have done; a cover letter explains why it matters for this role.
At product companies, startups, and multinational firms in India, hiring managers do read cover letters — especially for mid-to-senior roles. At mass hiring companies (TCS, Infosys campus drives), cover letters are less relevant.
Fresher Cover Letter Example
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to apply for the Software Developer position at [Company Name] as advertised on LinkedIn. I am a 2026 B.Tech Computer Science graduate from VIT Vellore with a CGPA of 8.4 and a strong foundation in Java, React, and cloud computing.
During my internship at [Company], I developed a REST API that reduced data processing time by 35%. My final-year project — a real-time collaborative code editor — was selected for the university's innovation showcase and is live on GitHub with 200+ stars.
I am particularly drawn to [Company Name] because of your work on [specific product/initiative]. I would welcome the opportunity to contribute to your engineering team.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to discussing how my skills align with your needs.
Experienced Professional Example
For experienced professionals, the cover letter should focus on your most relevant achievements and why you want to move to this specific company. Lead with your strongest qualification, not with "I am writing to apply for..."
Example opening: "In my four years as a Product Manager at Razorpay, I launched three payment features that collectively process ₹1,200Cr monthly. I am excited about the opportunity to bring this fintech experience to [Company Name]'s expanding payments platform."
Career Change Example
Career change cover letters are the most important ones to write well, because your resume alone will not make the case. Address the change directly: explain what transferable skills you bring and why you are making the switch.
Example: "After five years in management consulting at McKinsey, I am transitioning into product management — a move driven by my experience leading digital transformation projects where I discovered my passion for building products, not just advising on them."
Cover Letter Format Tips
- Keep it under one page — 250 to 400 words is ideal
- Use the same header (name, contact) as your resume for visual consistency
- Address a specific person if possible; "Dear Hiring Manager" is acceptable if you cannot find a name
- Three paragraphs: hook + relevant experience, why this company, and call to action
- Never repeat your resume bullet-for-bullet — add context and narrative instead
- Proofread. A cover letter with typos signals carelessness
