TCS, Infosys, and Wipro are among the largest recruiters of freshers in India, making them major employers of engineering and commerce graduates in India. Getting into one of these companies is a realistic and achievable goal for most graduates, but it requires preparation, not just luck. Here is a detailed guide to how their hiring processes work and what you need to do to succeed.
The Registration Process
All three companies have dedicated career portals for freshers. TCS uses TCS NextStep, Infosys has InfyTQ, and Wipro runs its National Talent Hunt. The process typically starts six to eight months before your graduation. Registration is free and requires basic details: your academic scores, degree, branch, college name, and contact information.
Key eligibility criteria: Most of these companies require a minimum of 60% aggregate across 10th, 12th, and graduation with no active backlogs at the time of the test. Some roles have higher cutoffs — TCS Digital, for instance, targets the top tier of performers and has a tougher test.
Register early. Slots fill up, and late registrants sometimes find that test centres near their city are already at capacity.
The Aptitude Test
This is the first screening round and filters out a large share of candidates. The test typically includes:
- Quantitative Aptitude: Percentages, profit and loss, time and work, permutations, probability. Practice from RS Aggarwal or IndiaBix.
- Verbal Ability: Reading comprehension, sentence correction, vocabulary. Read English newspapers daily for at least a month before the test.
- Logical Reasoning: Coding-decoding, pattern recognition, syllogisms, data interpretation. These questions test speed as much as accuracy.
- Programming MCQs or Coding Round: Basic programming questions in C, Java, or Python. TCS includes a hands-on coding round where you write actual code. Infosys tests through InfyTQ's coding assessments.
The single most effective way to prepare is mock tests. Platforms like PrepInsta, GeeksforGeeks, and the official practice portals of each company offer free mock tests that mirror the actual exam pattern.
The Interview Rounds
If you clear the aptitude test, you advance to interviews. These typically happen on campus or at a company-designated centre.
- Technical Interview: Expect questions on your core subjects (DBMS, OS, networking for CS students; accounting, economics for commerce students), your projects, and your resume. The interviewer will often pick one project from your resume and drill into the details. Know your projects inside out.
- Managerial/HR Interview: This round assesses communication skills, cultural fit, and your understanding of the company. Common questions include "Tell me about yourself," "Why this company?" and "Where do you see yourself in five years?" Prepare thoughtful, specific answers — not rehearsed scripts.
Resume Must-Haves for IT Service Companies
- Clear mention of your CGPA or percentage for 10th, 12th, and graduation
- Two to three projects with technology stack and your specific contribution
- Any certifications from NPTEL, Coursera, or the company's own platform (e.g., TCS iON)
- Internship experience, even if it was a college-mandated one
- Clean, single-page format with no spelling errors
Tips That Actually Make a Difference
Start your preparation at least two months before placement season. Join your college's placement cell WhatsApp group to stay updated on deadlines. Practice coding daily on HackerRank or LeetCode — even 30 minutes a day adds up. During the interview, be honest. If you do not know the answer to a technical question, say "I am not sure, but here is how I would approach it" rather than guessing. Interviewers respect intellectual honesty.
Finally, do not put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to multiple companies. The skills you build preparing for TCS will serve you equally well at Cognizant, HCL, or Tech Mahindra.
