Software Engineer Resume Format for Experienced Professionals

A software engineer resume for experienced professionals moves the weight from projects to impact at work. With 2–8 years behind you, recruiters want scope (what you owned), scale (users, requests, data) and outcome (latency, cost, revenue, reliability). Lead with experience in reverse order and keep education to a line.

Building and previewing is free. The sample below is a starting point: replace every blank with your own details.

Section order for this resume

Top to bottom, in the order recruiters read them.

  1. Contact + headline. e.g. "Senior Software Engineer · Java, Kafka, AWS · 5 yrs".
  2. Summary. Three lines: years, domain, the systems you own and your strongest result.
  3. Experience. Reverse order. 3–5 bullets per role, each with a metric.
  4. Skills. Grouped stack; drop anything you would not want to be interviewed on.
  5. Education & certifications. One line each.

Tips that make the difference

  1. Use the pattern "Did X using Y, which improved Z by N" for most bullets.
  2. Two pages are fine past ~6 years if every line earns its place.
  3. Remove college projects once you have two or more years of work.

Frequently asked questions

How many bullets per job?

Three to five for recent roles, one or two for older ones. Each should show a result, not a duty.

Should I include notice period and current CTC?

Not on the resume. Share them in the application form or with the recruiter.

One page or two?

One page up to about five years is ideal. Beyond that, two pages are acceptable if the second page is still relevant.
